Ashoka Janamana 2026, the annual Deepavali Vastra Vitarana programme organised by Rai Estate Educational and Charitable Trust, will take place on Sunday, November 8, 2026, at Kombettu Taluk Stadium, Puttur, Dakshina Kannada.
The programme, promoted by Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, will bring together clothing distribution, food service, cultural activities and a musical programme as part of the Deepavali season. The 2026 edition will introduce changes to the distribution process, queue arrangements and food schedule to make participation more organised and convenient for the public.
Deepavali Clothing Distribution from 10 AM
The distribution of clothing items is scheduled to begin at 10 AM, without waiting for special guests to arrive. Separate counters will be arranged for sarees, bed sheets and plates, with each counter assigned to a specific item.
An ink mark will be placed on beneficiaries' fingers to help prevent repeat collection from multiple counters. Organisers also plan to introduce a long, organised queue system to reduce crowding around individual distribution points.
The organisers have announced plans to distribute sarees and bed sheets selected for improved quality. The items are expected to carry a two-year guarantee, as announced during the programme's preparatory meeting.
Dosa Distribution and Annadana
Food service will run alongside the clothing distribution. Dosa distribution is scheduled to begin at 10 AM, while annadana will be served from 11:30 AM to 3 PM. Dosa distribution is also planned to resume in the afternoon.
The organisers aim to complete the clothing distribution by approximately 6 PM. Visitors should allow time for queues and follow the directions provided by volunteers at the stadium.
Goodudeepa Competition and Cultural Programme
The traditional Goodudeepa competition will continue as part of Ashoka Janamana 2026. The programme will also include the felicitation of 10 economically disadvantaged achievers.
The organisers have indicated that the large cultural programme will be scaled down this year, with a musical programme planned instead. Individual performers, the music programme schedule and special guest appearances have not yet been confirmed.
Public Coordination and Crowd Management
Changes to the 2026 arrangements follow crowding and logistical difficulties reported during the previous year's programme. The revised plan places emphasis on early distribution, clearly separated counters, organised queues and a more structured food-service schedule.
Organisers and volunteers are being asked to spread information at the village level and communicate the 10 AM distribution start time clearly. Coordination through the Trust, designated responsibilities and publicity through community networks and social media are also part of the preparations.
Programme Budget and Preparations
The programme has been estimated to cost approximately ₹4 crore, according to the figure announced at the preparatory meeting. Advance payments for sarees and bed sheets have also been reported as part of the preparations.
The organisers have stated that distribution arrangements will be made regardless of the number of people attending. The final attendance, actual expenditure and completed distribution figures will only be known after the event.
Who Is Organising Ashoka Janamana?
Ashoka Janamana is promoted by Ashok Kumar Rai, Puttur MLA and chief promoter of Rai Estate Educational and Charitable Trust. The programme is associated with the Trust's annual Deepavali clothing distribution initiative.
Suma Ashok Rai, a promoter of the Trust, has also spoken about quality checks for the sarees and bed sheets. Samples are planned to be washed, dried and checked before the items are purchased for distribution.
December Gathering for Workers
A separate gathering for workers is also being planned for December 2026. The proposed event is intended to bring workers together for food, refreshments and cultural activities at the stadium.
The organisers have discussed a gathering of approximately 10,000 workers. The December programme is separate from the November 8 Deepavali Vastra Vitarana event, and its final date and detailed schedule have not been announced.
