Mangaluru: A day after the official launch of Cancerthon, the Yenepoya Dental College organised another awareness programme for cancer in a bid to identify the deadly disease at an early stage. On January 17, Yenepoya Institute’s dental faculty conducted a screening programme for KSRTC employees and public at the KSRTC bus stand in Bejai.

Yenepoya Dental College in association with Yen-Onco is going out of the way to help the public in this regard as a part of their silver jubilee celebration. The dental faculty of Yenepoya headed by Dr. Rachana Prabhu led an awareness and screening programme for KSRTC visitors who registered at the venue.

The awareness programme was inaugurated by Mangaluru Divisional Controller of KSRTC Vivekananda Hegde, Divisional Mechanical Engineer K M Sharan Basavaraj, KSRTC Labour Officer Priya, HoD of Preventive Oncology in Yen Onco Centre Dr. Ibrahim Nagnoor and Reader of Oral Medicine and Radiology Dr. Tashika.

Making an appeal to the public gathered at the programme to be cautious about the onset of cancer, Dr. Ibrahim Nagnoor gave a talk on cancer awareness and preventive measures. The awareness talk was then followed by screening for oral, breast and cervical cancer.

Several passersby and travellers waiting for their respective buses were intrigued by this campaign and got themselves checked for oral cancer at the entrance of KSRTC bus stand. The women who wanted to be screened were taken to the top floor of the building where they were tested for breast and cervical cancer.

Yenepoya Institute made sure that the people who registered themselves were given adequate incentives for getting checked. A “Cancerthon Recommendation Card” was given to each person so as to help them avail free investigations on their respective health conditions. The Cancerthon Referral Card holders can avail free oral smear, vital staining for oral lesions, oral biopsy, dental radiographs, pap smear and FNAC/breast biopsy.

The card also lets the holders get 50 percent discount on chest radiographs, mammography, CT scan, USG, MRI scan and CBCT. Over the entire day, as many as 150 people were screened and given referral cards by Yenepoya Institute.
