Tumakuru ASI faces arrest, suspension on charges of raping mentally challenged woman

Tumakuru: A mentally challenged woman was allegedly raped in a moving vehicle by an assistant sub-inspector of police (ASI) in Tumkauru city on Saturday night.

Based on a complaint by the 31-year-old victim’s mother, the police on Sunday arrested ASI Umesh attached to the Tumakuru Rural police station. Tumakaru SP?Isha Pant summoned Umesh for questioning. Later, he was suspended.

However, the SP, who termed it a ‘serious case’ refused to give out more details of the case, even as there were ambiguity over the vehicle that was used for the crime as a section said that lady was raped in police jeep.

On Saturday, Umesh was on night rounds when he spotted the woman near a bridge at Antharasanahalli bypass. He asked her why she was standing there and offered to drop her home. After she got into the jeep, he tried to rape her. When the victim pleaded with him to spare her and started shouting, Umesh gagged her and raped her twice, DHNS quoted the victim’s brother.

The ASI had called the victim’s brother’s mobile number stating that his sister was wandering and hence he should come to pick her up. When the brother said that he was unwell, the ASI offered to drop her at their residence.

Following this, Umesh dropped the victim at her residence and her mother received her from the police jeep. But, when the mentally challenged woman was hurling abuses at the ASI, her mother probed and found out about the abuse.

A case was registered at the Tumakuru women’s police station on Sunday afternoon. The victim was sent for medical examination.
