Toll attendant swipes Rs 4 lakh instead of Rs 40 at Gundmi toll booth

Mangaluru: While going digital seemingly is the mantra of the government citing convenience in transactions, a Mysuru-based doctor was put to unnecessary inconvenience as a groggy toll attendant at Gundmi toll booth mistakenly swiped Rs 4 lakh instead of Rs 40 toll charges from his debit card.

The incident took place around 10.30 pm on Saturday, March 11 as the doctor was enroute to Mumbai. The doctor had given his debit card to be swiped at the booth and then he was handed over the POS receipt and and the toll receipt.

However after he received a text message that Rs 4 lakh had been debited from his account, he brought it to the notice of the toll gate staff who bluntly refused to acknowledge their mistake. The doctor tried in vain for nearly two hours to convince them about their mistake and recover his money where after he proceeded to Kota and filed a complaint at the police station there around 1am. He later returned to the toll gate with the head constable.

Finally, the toll booth personnel admitted to an error on the part of the attendant and offered to reimburse the doctor the excess amount debited via cheque. The doctor however insisted that he be paid the entire amount in cash.The toll gate personnel contacted senior officials of the collection company and made arrangements to pay the Rs 3,99,960 in cash around 4am.

The Gundmi toll gate has about Rs 8 lakh daily collection.
