BENGALURU: The social welfare department will providing free laptops to SC/ST students in professional degree and post-graduate course in the state.
Social welfare minister H Anjaneya on Wednesday said SC/ST students who take up higher education by way of government quota are eligible for it. “Accordingly , all SC/ST students who clear the Common Entrance Examination will get free laptops. Students in the first year of post-graduate or professional courses will be eligible,” he said.
Anjaneya said the department will use funds collected under the special act for the SC/ST community, SC/SP and TSP, to purchase these laptops. He said the department will give the best quality laptops to students. This is the second such laptop distribution scheme the current government is announcing. The first scheme of providing laptops to IIPUC students was shelved.
Report on caste census
On the much-delayed socio-economic census, Anjaneya said chief minister Siddaramaiah has sought a relook at the entire census collection and will then accept the report. “The report will be taken into consideration and presented to the government,” he said.
Meanwhile, backward classes commission chairperson H Kanthraju said the report is under preparation and it’ll take some time before it’s presented to the government.”The data has come from all districts. But there’s extensive work pending on the report. It’ll take some time, but we’ll try to give the report at the earliest,” he said.
